Intersecting a Qualitative

with a Mixed Methods Research Design

Dates: Wednesday, March 12 to Friday, March 14, 2025

LIVE on ZOOM (Eastern Daylight Time)
This 3-day workshop focuses on intersecting a qualitative research design with a mixed methods research design.

For example, in mixed methods-grounded theory, researchers can develop or revise a model and test it quantitatively. In a mixed methods-case study, researchers can apply mixed methods to understand a bounded case.

This workshop is an ideal opportunity for:
  • researchers with a mainly quantitative background to acquire a stronger foundation in using qualitative designs with mixed methods.
  • scholars who already use mixed methods but want more training in how to intersect mixed methods with specific qualitative designs.

What to Expect:

A concise overview of qualitative and mixed methods research:
  • Qualitative Research: A systematic process of inquiry that relies on open-ended data (e.g., text, interviews, focus groups, and images) and emphasizes inductive reasoning, collecting data in natural settings, and understanding participants’ points of view and lived experiences.
  • Mixed Methods Research: The integration of qualitative and quantitative research within a study.

The following qualitative designs will be introduced with a focus on strategies for how to design and conduct them in tandem with a mixed methods design:
  • Grounded Theory
  • Phenomenology
  • Case Study
  • Ethnography

You do not need to bring a project to participate in the workshop.
This is a good fit if:

you have a predominantly quantitative training and wish to learn more about qualitative designs

or

you already use mixed methods but want more training in how to intersect mixed methods with specific qualitative designs
