Are you proposing, conducting or writing a mixed methods dissertation or thesis?

Join the Mixed Methods Program at the University of Michigan for our summer workshop devoted to the mixed methods dissertation/thesis process. 


Audience: graduate students who want support designing and conducting a mixed methods dissertation or thesis*

*While this workshop is tailored to graduate students and their advisors,  it is appropriate for anyone who is designing and conducting a mixed methods project, including clinical trainees, staff or others.
What to expect from this 3 full-day live online workshop:
 ​
  • Choose an appropriate mixed methods design
  • Write a purpose statement and research questions
  • Select and apply a conceptual framework
  • Develop a figure illustrating the methods, design, procedures and outcomes
  • Develop a visual joint display for integrating your qualitative and quantitative data​
  • A panel on working productively with your advisor/committee
  • Structure your mixed methods dissertation or thesis, including the introduction, methods, results, and discussion
  • Understand the role of validity in mm research designs and their implications
  • Understand the process of publishing your mixed methods dissertation

Vicki Plano Clark, PhD
School of Education, University of Cincinnati 

Author of Designing and Conducting Mixed Methods Research (2018, co-authored with John W. Creswell) 

Dr. Plano Clark is an authority on mixed methodologies and author of numerous textbooks and articles delineating rigorous designs for mixed methods research. In 2011 she co-led the development of Best Practices for Mixed Methods in the Health Sciences for NIH's Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research and is a founding Managing Editor of the Journal of Mixed Methods Research (currently an assistant editor). Dr. Plano Clark also has extensive experience guiding doctoral students doing mixed methods dissertations.

  • $750 US for students - Proof of your student status (ex: scan of ID, current registration, letter from advisor) must be uploaded to application form
  • $1,050 US for general - Discount rate available for U-M Institute for Healthcare Policy & Innovation (IHPI), Michigan Mixed Methods Program (UM-MMP) members and U-M Department of Family Medicine members
  • Eligible for MMP scholarship 

Please note that this price includes 3 group consultations with expert interdisciplinary faculty on your project's methodology and access to a website with slides, recordings, article pdfs, and design templates during and after the workshop.
