Faculty profile

James E. Aikens, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Family Medicine, Editor-in-Chief of Chronic Illness, and Associate Editor of Family Practice. His research focuses upon the use of mobile health (mHealth) technology to address the behavioral aspects of chronic illness self-management, particularly within health care settings and communities challenged by disparities due to minority race and ethnicity, underinsurance, and/or regional poverty. Several of his ongoing projects include mixed-methods aims. He is currently PI of R01 (NIMH) and R18 (NIDDK) projects testing mHealth plus enhanced lay support for medically-underserved patients with depression and diabetes, respectively. Dr. Aikens is a clinical psychologist, and practices cognitive-behavioral therapy within primary care settings.
