MAXQDA WORKSHOP

An introduction to the fundamentals of MAXQDA, a qualitative and mixed methods analysis software program with hands-on activities

What to Expect:
  • In the first session, Dr. Guetterman will introduce the ways that qualitative software can be used and provide a detailed introduction to MAXQDA features. Participants will have time to practice using the software as features are demonstrated. Major topics will include: understanding the user interface, importing data, viewing and editing data, coding and managing codes, retrieving coded segments, working with memos, searching the database, and exporting coded segments and reports.
  • In the second session, there will be more hands-on work and continue with advanced features of MAXQDA. He will also introduce mixed methods features, such as adding quantitative data, conducting a mixed methods analysis, and building joint displays of integrated qualitative and quantitative results.​
You will download a MAXQDA trial license in order to practice using the software. Participants can bring their own data or use a sample dataset (provided).

INSTRUCTOR BIO

Timothy C. Guetterman, PhD; Family Medicine, University of Michigan
Dr. Guetterman is an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan and Associate Director of the Mixed Methods Program and a methodologist focused on research design and mixed methods research. He teaches mixed methods workshops to interdisciplinary audiences in the US, South Africa, UK, Germany, Denmark, Korea, and Japan.  He writes to advance rigorous methods of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research, particularly strategies for interesting and integrating qualitative and quantitative research. Tim is the PI of National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded research that uses quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research to investigate the use of virtual human technology in health, education, and assessment. He also conducts research on teaching, learning, and developing research methods capacity as Co-PI of a William T. Grant Foundation qualitative and mixed methods research capacity building grant and in his role as evaluator and Co-I for the NIH Mixed Methods Research Training Program for the Health Sciences. Tim has extensive professional experience conducting program evaluation with a focus on educational and healthcare programs. He co-authored with John W. Creswell, Educational Research: Planning, Conducting, and Evaluating Quantitative and Qualitative Research (6th ed). Tim is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Mixed Methods Research (IF: 3.333, #10 of 104 in Social Sciences, Interdisiplinary).

Withdrawal and Refund Policy:
Participants may withdraw from the workshop and receive a full refund if done before February 1, 2021. Withdrawals done between February 2 and February 15, 2021 will be subject to a late withdrawal fee of $30. There will be no refunds for withdrawing on or after February 16, 2021.
